New shelter opens in Gastonia

The First United Methodist Church of Gastonia will host the Cold Weather Shelter, giving those without homes a warm place to sleep when temperatures are forecast to be 32°F or lower.

The church is on East Franklin Boulevard and the shelter will be inside the Family Life Center of the church. It will be open from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am. Poster printing can be used so that people in need know where they can find warmth on a cold night.

The shelter will have blankets and cots. The United Way of Gaston County, Healthnet Gaston, and Gateway Gaston are working on providing clothing, food, and other essential items. Security at the shelter is provided by local law enforcement officers. The governments of Gaston County and the city of Gastonia are working to recruit volunteers to staff the shelter.

Steve Eaton, Assistant County Manager for Gaston County, expressed his gratitude towards Pastors Melissa and Justin Howe for providing this much-needed care. He said their partnership demonstrates how members of the community and local government can work together to serve those in need.

Assistant city manager of Gastonia, Quentin McPhatter, said the collaboration with Gaston County and the First United Methodist Church shows what can be done when members of the community collaborate to support those in need, and that everyone will continue to work together to meet this need.
