A new Regional Processing and Distribution Center of the United States Postal Service has opened in Gastonia.
It is one of the first such regional facilities in the country and will serve as a template for 60 additional facilities planned across the nation. It is located on Scaleybark Road in the Northpoint Development. Banner printing is often used at sites like this to make the community aware of such facilities and their benefits for a region.
Louis DeJoy, United States Postmaster General, said the facility covers 700,000 square feet. He commented that now the USPS competes with UPS, FedEx, and other package carriers in the region, the goal of the USPS is to become the preferred delivery provider in the country.
The Regional Processing and Distribution Center in Gastonia will serve communities as far south as Columbia and west to Johnson City, Tennessee. DeJoy said that it was selected as the first such facility based on analytics showing the traffic coming in and out of the Southeast. He added that the NorthPoint Development, which is an industrial park spanning 365 acres between Lowell, Gastonia and its location on Interstate 85, was ideal for this facility.
The facility in Gastonia will have between 700 and 1,000 employees. There are currently 400 people working at the distribution center, with more planned to be hired in 2024.
