New position in housing insecurity appointed in Gastonia

The Gastonia Police Department has created a new position that is designed to assist people experiencing housing insecurity.

Gayle Mahl is the new homeless coordinator in Gastonia. Mahl will be a liaison between organizations and agencies that work to address issues of homelessness and the police department and will identify needs and support families and individuals who are already experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. More information about such roles and their benefits for the community can be found with the use of flyer printing services.

Mahl has over 40 years of experience in behavioral health. She has been the lead for the Point in Time Count program of Gaston County which counts the unsheltered and sheltered people who experience homelessness on one night in January. This program helps needs within the community to be identified by the county and measures the progress of the county in decreasing homelessness.

She has also frequently collaborated with the police department and helped to create the Critical Time Intervention Program, which helps those who suffer from addition and mental health issues in addition to homelessness.

Travis Brittain, chief of the police department, said that Mahl will be an excellent and welcome addition to the department. Brittain added that with her experience she will be the ideal liaison and advocate for anyone who has issues with addiction or homelessness.
