New police chief appointed in Gastonia

Trent Conard will be the new chief of police for the Gastonia Police Department. He has been interim chief since Travis Brittain retired in October 2022.

News of such appointments is often made known throughout the community with flyer printing.

Conard has been with the department since 1996 and will be the 25th chief of police for the city. There are over 200 employees in the department – a figure that includes both civilians and sworn officers.

In October 2020, Conard was promoted from captain to assistant police chief. As a member of the Gastonia Police Department, he has been commander of the Special Situations Unit in which the bomb squad, SWAT, the mobile field force and mobile command, and crisis negotiators are included, and has been commander of the Division of Criminal Investigations.

Conard said he is looking forward to being police chief, serving the citizens of Gastonia, and leading a department of dedicated individuals who are passionate about serving and protecting both visitors and residents.

Michael Peoples, city manager, said an extensive nationwide search was held for the position and it was clear that Interim Chief Conard was the ideal person to lead the Gastonia Police Department. Peoples added that he will serve the community well given his passion, broad experience of law enforcement, and managerial and organizational skills.
