New performing arts center to be built near Gastonia

The North Caolina General Assembly has provided funding in the amount of $9 million to Belmont Abbey College in Belmont for the construction of a new performing arts center.

This new performing arts center will enable the college community and those in the surrounding region, including Gastonia, to enjoy art exhibitions, musical performances, theater, and dance, as well as other cultural and educational events.

Announcements of such funding and upcoming projects is often made known throughout a region with flyer printing.

Senator Brad Overcash said that there will be a Community Leadership Advisory Committee with close to 25 leaders in the arts community from the county participating in the project. This committee will meet later in the month to provide their input for the conceptual design, study, and programming for the performing arts center.

Constituents from the college and other subject matter experts in the community will provide their input to make recommendations for a report that will include suggested programming in the center and conceptual drawings.

Manager of Gaston County, Dr. Kim Eagle, said that this will be a major economic development for the county and will provide opportunities for both students and the community. Eagle added that the performing arts center will support two focus areas of the strategic plan of the county, those being recreational, cultural, and life-long learning opportunities and economic development and planned growth.
