An appropriate exhibit opened at the Schiele Museum in Gastonia on May 23. Titled ‘The Scoop on Ice Cream’, this refreshing exhibit will be hanging around throughout the summer.
The museum, celebrating everyone’s favorite summertime treat, will explore the origins of the sweet confection, as well as the chemistry that makes it possible. Additionally, the exhibit will highlight Tony’s Ice Cream, a family-owned local business that has been in operation for five generations.
As the museum’s president/director, Dr. Ann Tippitt notes that ice cream is not a recent invention. The current owner of Tony’s Ice Cream, Louis Coletta, has lent some of the tools and equipment used throughout the years in the making of ice cream, as well as historic photographs, to the Schiele.
One part of the exhibit that is sure to bring back memories for some Gastonia residents is the replica of an old-time ice cream parlor. The ice cream shop reproduction is complete with the iconic red booths and a copy of an ice cream case highlighting the iconic flavors found at Tony’s.
A model barrel pushcart is on hand to show how Carmine Coletta sold his products at the turn of the 20th Century. Memorabilia items from that period have become collectibles, including advertisements produced through poster printing services. The exhibit can be seen up until Labor Day, which is September 7 this year.
