Labor of love for cops at Christmas

Police in Gastonia assume a special assignment this holiday season; they will team up with youngsters from the west Gastonia Boys and Girls Club and participate in a Shop with a Cop program.

The Gastonia Police Foundation, a nonprofit associated with the department, suggested the idea as a way for officers to provide some children with a merrier Christmas than they would otherwise have. Residents may have already seen Flyers explaining that Gastonia police officers are accepting donations.

As a small incentive, donors can sign their names to a special ornament for each $10 donation. These ornaments are displayed either on a tree in the front desk area or on department’s wall. Additionally, another tree of donation ornaments is reserved for donations made by officers and their family and friends.

Officers are well on their way of meeting their goal of sponsoring at least 30 kids. Two weeks out from their scheduled shopping day, they have already obtained an anonymous donation of $5,000, as well as a grant for $2,000. Each child will receive up to $200 to splurge on new clothes, shoes, and even toys at Target while in the company of their officer buddy.

Not just about providing the kids with a better Christmas, an equally important objective is to build a positive relationship between the youth and police officers. The shopping trip is scheduled for Saturday, December 12.
