Free fair housing workshops are being offered by the city of Gastonia in partnership with North Carolina Legal Aid.
The director of housing and neighborhoods for Gastonia, Danette Dye, said that an important aspect of fair housing is education. Dye will be working with Cherie Jzar, the diversity, equity and inclusion coordinator of the city, to provide these workshops.
Staff from North Carolina Legal Aid will be holding four free workshops online with one to be taught in Spanish. Among the topics to be covered in the workshops will be responsibilities of landlords, housing discrimination, and information for those who in fields related to housing. There will be a panel discussion of housing professionals who will talk about the limitations and rights of professionals who provide housing during the last workshop. Flyer printing is often used to provide more details on topics covered in such workshops, as well as their time and links for logging in.
Laws on fair housing protect the rights of people to obtain a mortgage, buy a home, or rent an apartment, among other housing options. Jzar said that the community of Gastonia is known for its diversity and that nobody should be denied housing because of their identity. Jzar and Dye said that these workshops are designed to provide the information residents need so they can make informed decisions about housing.
The workshops will take place on Thursdays this month, with the first one taking place tomorrow. Guests can go to the city of Gastonia website to sign up.
