Donyel Barber, a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta and resident of Gastonia, is the recipient of the Citizenship and Service Award of 2021 from the Gaston Business Association.
The award is sponsored by Duke Energy and is given to an individual each year who employs their compassion, talent, and time to affect those in the community or workplace in a positive way.
Announcements of such awards are often made known throughout a community with banner printing.
Barber said that although state and national awards are great, it means more to be recognized in one’s hometown. She returned to Gastonia after graduating from college so she could have a positive influence on the community. She was a child protective services staffer at the Gaston County Department of Social Services and then became the executive director of Family Promise of Gaston County. Barber said that her career has been based on being both a resource and a connection.
She was recognized for her service on the Gastonia City Council. She was elected to the Council in November 2019. Before that, she had been recognized for her contributions to the community with the Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Award from the Concerned Citizens Coalition and the Gaston Clergy, and the Dr. Edward D. Sadler Jr. Award from United Way of Gaston County.
