The surveillance capabilities of the Gastonia Police Department are being expanded with the addition of more cameras throughout the city.
The department has said that these cameras will help to both prevent and solve crimes. In addition, the proposal aligns with the efforts of the department to build a real-time crime center. Norfolk Southern Railway has awarded a grant of $15,000 to implement the real-time crime center. Another grant of $1 million has been awarded by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services for the center.
There are currently 21 Flock cameras in the city that can read license plates. The department will now be able to purchase 22 more cameras. As these are newer models, they will be able to zoom in on the plates and vehicles and better record and follow criminal activity that is suspected.
News of such improvements for a department is often made known throughout a community with the help of local Print shops.
This camera technology has been used in 122 cases in 2023, of which 55 have been solved. The technology also gives the department access to the more than 3,000 cameras that are in the Flock system. This will enable the Gastonia Police Department to capture stolen cars from other parts of the state and help to identify homicide victims, for example, as they have done in the past.
