Gastonia dash to get off and running

A race to support Research Down Syndrome Foundation will take place at the Blakeney Professional Center in Gastonia this weekend.

The race, dubbed “3-2-1 Dash for Down Syndrome”, is being hosted by The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte (DSAGC). This is the second year of the event, which is a 5K run.

DSAGC provides support in 11 counties of North and South Carolina, helping more than 600 families. Among its programs are a First Call Program to reach out to new parents of a Down syndrome child, and two summer camps. The organization’s mission is to assist individuals with the syndrome in realizing their potential.

The organization also works with local schools in a program called Together in Education. Another community-oriented event with which DSAGC is ‘Buddy Walk’, its annual golf tournament. Also, a new event on the organization's calendar called the Carolinas Down Syndrome conference is being held at the University Hilton in September.

The upcoming race takes its name from the chromosomal abnormality that causes Down syndrome - three Copies of chromosome 21 (thus the name 3-2-1). Events such as this one are not only about raising money but about education as well, so brochure printers often play a pivotal role in their promotion.

Last year's event raised $6,000, and the goal this time is to reach $8,000. It kicks off this Saturday, April 26, and the event has an official website for those who would like to learn more.
