A free bus service that has been offered by the Gastonia Transit System will be extended for a few more months.
This is being done to help people experiencing social and economic issues at this time. Director of community services, Vincent Wong, said that the city is continuing to support its residents in hopes of the ending of the pandemic soon. Free bus service was originally offered beginning last year.
Passengers are required to both enter and exit the busses using the rear door although those needing assistance will be able to enter using the front door as that door will be secured by the driver. Such passengers can learn about other safety protocols and accommodations in place through flyer printing.
There are eight transit buses, 35 feet long, and three demand response vans that comprise the Gastonia Transit System. Both the vans and buses are air-conditioned and designed to accommodate mobility-impaired passengers. The main bus and downtown transfer terminal for the system in located on N. Oakland Street ,which allows for easy and quick transfers to be made. Gastonia Transit serves over 282,000 passengers and covers close to 300,000 miles a year.
Free bus service will be offered through Saturday July 3. There will be no bus service on Memorial Day, Monday May 31, and in celebration of Independence Day on Sunday July 4 and Monday July 5.
