Exhibit highlights historical arts

The exhibit ‘Backcountry Artisans in Contemporary Times’ is showing at the Schiele Museum of Natural History until the end of next month.

It is a display of various 18th-century skills and crafts that have been interpreted by 51 local artists. The exhibition includes artworks and everyday objects created in wood, metal, textiles, pottery, and other genres; clothing is also included.

In addition to the exhibit, the museum will be holding a Backcountry Crafts Fair at the beginning of next month. Local artisans will be selling items that have been created using traditional methods from colonial times. Some of the items that will be available for sale will be tinware, textiles, cooking utensils, carvings, and even musical instruments. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet the artisans and watch several demonstrations of historic skills.

The exhibit is free with museum admission. The museum is open seven days a week, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and 1:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for children aged four and up, as well as students and seniors. Gastonia residents get $2 off.

To advertise events such as these in Gastonia, organizers might invest in flyer printing services.

Backcountry Artisans in Contemporary Times will be on display until October 30. The Backcountry Fair will be held on October 1 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Contact Phil McGinnis at 704-866-6923 to learn more.
