A proposal is currently being developed by leaders in Belmont to create the first dog park in the city.
Residents of Gastonia looking for different places for enabling their pets to frolic in the open spaces might be interested in such a park.
The park, should it get the go-ahead, would be located on a two-acre parcel of land at the corner of Twelfth and East Catawba Streets. The lot is owned by the city and has many shaded trees, which would provide some relief from the sun. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform the community of upcoming proposed projects.
Adrian Miller, Belmont City Manager, said the lot is close to other public recreation facilities, which makes it ideal for a dog park and a planned recreation hub that will include the Abbey Creek Greenway and riverfront park.
Zip Stowe, Belmont Parks and Recreation Director, said that the park is still being designed but will have water fountains, outdoor seating, and fencing for both a small dog and a large dog play area. Stowe expects the project to cost at least $45,000, about $11,000 of which has already been raised. This includes a donation from the Bark and Brew Virtual 5K, held by the Downtown Belmont Development Association in November.
City council members will discuss the proposal early next year.
