The Residents of Durham will be given the opportunity to vote on whether a portion of educational bonds worth $500m will be used to benefit the Durham School of Arts.
The Durham School of Arts has been around since 1995 and it is one of Bull City’s oldest buildings. The school operates as a magnet school, which means that admission is granted to students based on a lottery system. Close to 2,000 students are currently enrolled there and they study subjects such as film, dance, creative writing, and music. Most schools like this are happy to receive promotional Pens as donations.
There are arguments that plot where the school currently resides is restricting the school’s ability to grow. Also, a consultant recently told the school board that the campus was not safe and the classrooms were outdated, and these are among the reasons why the school intends to move to another location.
The school owns 57 acres of land on Duke Homestead Road. Moving the school to this location would cost $108.7m, and voters are being asked to fund it with a raise in property taxes. In order to raise the funds necessary for this project as well, as renovation projects for other schools in the area, property taxes would have to go up by about 2.5 cents for every $100 of property value assessed.
The referendums on whether to agree to the tax hikes will be open to voters in the fall of 2022.
