New afterschool program teaches STEM

Learners in Durham now have a new place where they can get started with subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Code Wiz is a computer-based school that opened in late January. It operates as an after-school program where children and high school teens can learn more about robotics and how to code.

Code Wiz’s stated goal is to provide kids with exposure to the STEM fields in an environment where they can also learn critical thinking. The school was founded by Teresa Hartsfield. When talking about the courses on offer, she said:

“Coding is really the language of the future, it’s machine-readable, so it communicates to all devices like GPS systems, computers, phones, anything you use on a day-to-day basis, even microwaves.”

Hartfield learned about robotics and how to code as she grew older. She found it rather difficult to learn these subjects at a more advanced age and wants to give young people a chance to learn about these subjects at an age when their brains are more malleable, which means they may find it easier.

According to Hartfield, there is no other school like Code Wiz in Durham and she wants her school to be the first of many to come, which is the sort of offering that may be promoted through flyer printing. Parents signed their kids up for classes from the day the school opened.
