Long-awaited reopening of Duke Chapel is daylong event

Duke University Chapel, a popular Durham wedding location, had an official reopening on May 11 following a yearlong renovation.

Newly engaged couples will once again be able to tell Stationery printers to list Duke Chapel as their wedding venue, assuming they can find an empty weekend. It took a year, but crews replaced the chapel’s original roof and rehabilitated its ceiling, in addition to sprucing up the rest of the building and its contents.

Luke Powery, the Dean of Duke Divinity School, explained that the renovation created a safer environment for those who attend the chapel. He also said the renovation of the old building had returned it to its original beauty, and its stained glass windows, wood etchings, and organ now look as they did when it first opened in the 1930s.

The official reopening and took place at the Duke Chapel, and was an all-day celebration that began with the 10:00 am ribbon cutting. The day continued until 10 pm with no fewer than five guided tours, three separate organ demonstrations, the long-standing traditional Senior Students Chapel Tower Climb, and a Carillon concert.

A First Celebration Worship Service will take place at the Duke University Chapel on May 22. According to Duke University President Richard Brodhead, the recently finished work should take the chapel through another 80 years.
