The Durham City Council voted in favor of annexing about 160 acres of land.
The land will be used to construct an industrial park that will cover 1.3 million square feet. The project has unofficially been named Welcome Venture Park, and it will be located on a vacant plot on Old Oxford Road. It is situated in the Braggtown neighborhood, which is a working-class community on the northern edge of the city.
The project is being run by the Welcome Group, a property development group based in Houston. The company decided to give $30,000 worth of scholarships to students from Durham Tech who wish to enroll in higher education courses related to construction. The company’s attorney said that 20 students will benefit from the scholarships.
The Planning Commission gave this project its support in October last year. The council’s most recent vote was unanimous, and the decision was made easier by the fact that the property was previously zoned for light-to-moderate industrial use. Changes to zoning laws are often shared on documents with official Letterheads.
The first phase of the project will cover about 400,000 square feet. Future phases will see another 900,000 square feet added. The utility extension agreement states that only the first phase will involve the city’s sewer and water lines. The site was previously used as an electric plant by Mitsubishi.
