Durham hiker to raise money for myeloma at Iceland event

Durham resident Tina Fazio Hurlbert will be heading to Iceland this August for a five day stay to take part in the Fire + Ice Trek, raising funds for myeloma research.

In Iceland, Hurlbert will join a group comprised of myeloma stakeholders. Patients, caregivers, nurses, and doctors, as well as Myeloma loved ones, will take on challenging mountains — the Everest Base Camp, Mt. Fuji, the Grand Canyon, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and Machu Picchu in Peru as part of ‘Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma’.

The public’s lack of knowledge is often a big obstacle to raising money to fight the less publicized diseases or conditions. Brochure printing provides an opportunity to enlighten the public about the beneficiary of a fundraiser.

An incurable blood cancer, the second most common after non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, myeloma is treatable. Moving Mountains was established in 2016 and has raised almost $2.5m to increase awareness of myeloma and to fund its research. A full 100% of funds raised go directly to the cause.

Starting August 7, the group will undertake seven to eight hours of hiking a day to their end-of-day destination at mountain huts. The hiking will be rigorous but sights such as glaciers, hot springs, geysers, volcanoes, lava beds, gorges, and waterfalls will serve as outstanding scenic distractions.

For the Fire + Ice Trek, Tina will honor Scott Hurlbert, her husband, on her hike. Scott was diagnosed with multiple myeloma seven years ago.
