Wellston plans new park

A new community park is planned for Wellston, a community about five miles from Olivette.

The park will be located on a vacant lot at the corner of Etzel and Skinker, and is the product of a partnership formed by Wellston, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and Green Rivers Greenway.

The new park is part of the NRPA initiative known as ‘Parks Build Community’, which demonstrates that parks can transform communities throughout the nation. The new venture will be called Trojan Park after a former Wellston high school.

The park's site is adjacent to the St. Vincent Greenway, which is a paved, urban, seven-mile greenway that will connect Forest Park to a number of public transit stops, as well as the University of Missouri at St. Louis. NRPA plans to work with its suppliers and partners to get donations to the park.

Wellston residents have been asked for their input, and have requested a court for different sports, a playground everyone can enjoy, a splash pad for the summer, and a multiuse pavilion.

The date of the park's opening has been set for October 8, 2016, during the annual NRPA conference. City officials could create Banners to celebrate the opening and welcome area residents. Banners are uniquely suited to the task, since they are sturdy and can be used outdoors.
