The St. Louis County Pet Adoption Center, which has locations near Olivette, has changed its thinking. As a result, the facility has said that is saving more animals, and helping them find forever homes.
Last month, the rate of live release was 97% - the best ever.
The change in policy is a result of measures taken by Steve Stenger, who is the St. Louis County Executive. When he took office, Stenger said one of his plans was to improve animals' chances of being adopted. At the time, half of those in the shelters never left. Stenger has changed the policy from being focused on controlling animals, to finding homes for them.
In December 2016, only 66% of pets were adopted, while 34% were euthanized, but by September 2017, the number euthanized had dropped to 11%. Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock is now the animal control facility's director, and she says they have changed their attitude, from keeping animals comfortable until they are put to sleep, to making them comfortable until adopted, with great results.
Vesco-Mock also has words of advice for prospective pet parents—do not have a preconceived idea about a new pet. Instead, take the time to look at each and every one and find the one that is right for the entire family.
