For the fourth year in a row, people came from across the area—and the country—to take part in Olivette's Turkey Trot, which was held on Thanksgiving Day.
Over 1,200 people participated in the 5K, which raised $8,700; the money was donated to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry. Olivette itself is a sponsor of the pantry, which serves more than 6,500 people monthly. The combined total donated to the pantry for the years 2014 to 2016 is over $16,500.
The day of the race turned out to be perfect as far as the weather was concerned, with sunny skies and mild temperatures. The course of the 5K, a run/walk event, starts and ends at Stacey Park. Runners follow a loop that takes them onto paved residential streets, and then to an asphalt trail, where they can enjoy the scenery. The race is timed by Chronotrak, which provides accurate results for all runners, no matter where they are when they start.
This year, runners were encouraged to pick up their packets before the race so they could meet the event sponsors, who held a supporters' expo for the first time. First place this year went to Phillip Soncasie of St. Louis, who finished in 17 minutes, 14 seconds.
Events like this can be even more festive if organizers use Banners to decorate the venue, and to indicate the beginning and end of the course.
