The Coffee with a Cop event will give people a chance to talk to one of Olivette's police officers over a traditional symbol of warmth and friendship, a cup of coffee. These events give people and the police a chance to meet socially, without the stress that accompanies a call to the police in an emergency.
Coffee with a Cop is a nationwide event that was started in 2011 in Hawthorne, California, when police there started looking for ways to interact with residents in a successful and laid-back way. The police decided that having coffee with the people they protect was a good way to break through the barriers between them and the city's residents. Coffee with a Cop is now celebrated the first Wednesday in October in the United States, and in many countries around the world. It is part of the widely used concept of community policing.
The Olivette Police Department is small, but has won international accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
The next local Coffee with a Cop is set for Next Thursday, March 5, from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm, at Fallon's Bar and Grill on Olive Boulevard. Events like this are the perfect place for attendees to exchange contact information in the form of Business Cards.
