Olivette has tales to tell

Olivette residents who love reading and storytelling have a treat in store, since it’s almost time for the St. Louis Storytelling Festival.

The festival brings together storytellers from throughout the area. In addition to listening to tales, people have a chance to attend specialized workshops designed for families, educators, aspiring storytellers, and community members; and a showcase performance. All events are open to the public, and free, though preregistration is required for some.

Among the storytellers attending are Lynette (Lyn) Ford, who creates her own adaptation of folk tales, Sandy Sylver and her puppets, and GeneTagaban, who is also known as ‘One Crazy Raven’. Tagaban, who is Filipino, Cherokee, and Tlingit, shares Native American tales, as well as personal experiences.

Many of the events are scheduled for public library branches, including University City, only three miles from Olivette. Among the events at University City are a workshop with Joyce Slater, who discusses ‘Our Stories Tell Us Who We Are; and a workshop with Lyn Ford about the connections between laughter and storytelling.

Events are scheduled to take place throughout the area, in libraries in St. Charles, University City, St. Louis, Frontenac, and other locations. Festival organizers might work with a banner printing company to create Banners for each of the venues.

The festival is slated to run April 30 through May 2, with storytellers delighting audiences throughout the day in various locations. Visit the festival website for complete information.
