Music on the schedule near Olivette

Residents throughout the St. Louis area have a treat in store: the fifty-piece Gateway Symphony Orchestra is playing a public concert soon.

The performance, which is titled ‘Miniatures and a Masterpiece’, will take place at Washington University in St. Louis, on Brookings Quadrangle. Attendees, no doubt including some from nearby Olivette, are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs and make themselves comfortable on the grass.

The program consists of pieces by Russian composers. The concert incudes the ‘Russlan and Ludmilla Overture’ by Mikhail Glinka, ‘Kikimora’ by Anatoly Lyadov, ‘Andante Cantible for String Orchestra’ by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. and the ‘Polovtsian Dances’ from ‘Prince Igor’ by Aleksandr Borodin. After an intermission, violin soloist Julia Sakharova will join the orchestra to play Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major. Concertgoers may recognize many of these melodies.

The concert is free, as is the parking, plus children who attend will receive a prize for doing so. Frozen custard, courtesy of Ted Drewes, will be available for people to purchase.

The concert is scheduled for this Sunday, July 30. Although the music starts at 7:30 pm, there will be a discussion before the concert. The ‘Notes to Munch On/Meet the Artists’ talk starts at 7:10 pm.
