The St. Louis-based Geekway to the West convention will hold its annual Geekway Mini this November, with a focus on board gaming.
The Geekway convention launched in 2005 as a small get-together and has since expanded to a major four-day convention that draws in tabletop game enthusiasts from across the St. Louis area, including areas like Olivette and Ferguson, as well as the broader Midwest and international game designers.
The “Mini” convention aims to bring the event back to its roots with a weekend of pure board gaming, eschewing vendors, door prizes, design competitions, and other elements associated with the full-fledged event. This year’s Geekway Mini was delayed from its usual time slot of January, and has hence been dubbed “Bride of Geekway Mini.”
The event will be limited to 400 attendees to maintain a friendly and intimate feel. Board game conventions like this typically feature games developed as part of the board game boom of the last decade, with an emphasis on strategy, unique mechanics, and science-fiction and fantasy themes. Fans of these games attend conventions as well as smaller meet-ups and clubs, typically advertised through poster printing and social media to discover and try out new games. Geekway Mini encourages this by offering a Play and Win area, where the winning player can take the game home.
The 2021 edition of Geekway Mini will take place from November 12 to 14 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel St. Louis Westport, a new venue for the event.
