Missouri book stores to host Nobel laureate

A group of St. Louis-area bookstores will be hosting a virtual conversation with Nobel Prize for Literature award-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro next month.

The talk will be the only evening event Ishiguro is doing in the US for his current virtual book tour, promoting his new novel Klara and the Sun. The novel, Ishiguro’s first in six years, blends literary prose and science fiction in telling a story from the perspective of an “Artificial Friend.” Born in Japan but having lived in England since the age of 5, Ishiguro has received honors such as the Man Booker Prize and the Order of the British Empire. He is most well-known for his novels The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go.

The event will be hosted by Washington Post critic Ron Charles, and feature a free-flowing conversation about the new novel and Ishiguro’s literary approach. The talk is hosted by Left Bank Books, Anderson’s Bookshop and Boswell Books. These stores typically host author talks and readings, as well as monthly book clubs such as Left Bank’s sci-fi focused Great Novels of the 22nd Century discussion group, aiming to draw in readers from St. Louis and nearby areas like Olivette and Ferguson. Over the past year, many book stores have turned to virtual versions of these talks, often using tools like flyer printing and social media to raise awareness.

The virtual talk with Kazuo Ishiguro will take place on the evening of March 16. The first 250 people to order a copy of Klara and the Sun from Left Bank Books will receive a signed bookplate.
