Olivette has been able to demonstrate the importance of Old Bonhomme Road to the community, with the result that the federal government has awarded Olivette more than $1.9m to help repair the road. Work will be carried out on the section of the road from Price Road to Olive Boulevard.
Old Bonhomme Road is the most widely used street in Olivette that is maintained by the city, as a two-mile stretch running from the east end of the city almost to the western limit. According to a recent item on the city's website, there has been little or no work done on the road for years, and the neglect has begun to show.
The scheduled improvements include removing and replacing all concrete gutters and curbs, building four-foot-wide sidewalks, removing the top surface of the road and replacing it with a new layer of asphalt; and rebuilding all the parts of the road that require restoration.
The improvements to the road will require Olivette to acquire additional land along the right-of-way, and the city is currently buying these strips from people who own property along Old Bonhomme Road. The city is encouraging property owners to talk to the city about the process.
