Cary Gray, a Creve Coeur resident, decided to break a Guinness World Record for riding a unicycle. Last month he achieved his goal – riding all the way to South America to do so.
During Gray’s trip, he rode 9,972 miles, wore out two wheels, changed 25 flat tires, and was on the road for 10 months. He also crossed the United States before pedaling to South America. In addition to breaking the record, Gray wanted to use his effort to raise funds on behalf of Greenpeace, as well as the International Child Art Foundation.
The Foundation works with children from all over the world to help them develop their creativity and empathy; these two qualities have been found to be help improve academic performance, as well as being important attributes for leaders of the 21st Century.
According to his father Tom, Cary’s uncle gave him a unicycle when he was very young. Now 25, Cary’s been riding it ever since.
The one-wheeled wonder says he’s been able to accomplish the ride by getting lots of sleep and remaining on a strictly vegetarian diet. He’s enjoyed getting to meet and know people in different countries as well.
The Grays might consider getting together with a brochure printer to create a mailer about the trip, soliciting donations for the organizations being supported from those living in Creve Coeur, Olivette, and elsewhere in Missouri.
