Rochester ready to hit the slopes

Locals can ski by candlelight at Quarry Hill Nature Center during Minnesota’s upcoming Winterfest 2019.

A mix of moonlight and candlelight will help all participants enjoy the beauty of the Minnesota winter landscape after dark. The cross-country skiing excursion at Quarry Hill is a part of the Winterfest festivities. Those that take part can ski the trails and then return to the center’s base for a warmup that includes s’mores and hot cocoa in front of the fireplace.

The organizers warn that only experienced skiers should attempt this event. The Nature Center will have equipment available to borrow, but does not take reservations. Guests should arrive early if they need to borrow gear to ensure something is available.

The event is just one of the many activities that will take place around the city during the monthlong festival. Those interested in all the activities should check the festival website, and flyer printing is another common way to let people know about upcoming festivities.

The Quarry Hill Nature Center Candlelight Skiing will take place on February 1, from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm. The weather and trail conditions could affect the event, so call before arriving, or visit the Quarry Hill Facebook page for updates. The center has offered a discounted night skiing rate of $10 per person for this event. Admission is payable at the door only.

The Quarry Hill Nature Center is located at 701 Silver Creek Road NE in Rochester.
