Classical ballet to take flight in Rochester

Rochester’s Mayo Civic Center is hosting the World Ballet Company’s production of Swan Lake this October.

Pirouettes will fly amid painted set pieces, more than 150 handmade dresses and outfits, all set against a live orchestra performing Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s musical masterpiece.

Fifty dancers from around the globe bring this story of good and evil to life, featuring classic numbers from Dance of the Little Swans to Black Swan’s 32 fouettés.

The story, written by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltser, focuses on European folklore about a hunter who meets a swan lady in the woods.

The original run of Swan Lake flopped upon its debut in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. However, revivals held in subsequent decades with new choreography slowly turned the tide, making it a smash hit by the end of the 19th century.

The artistic direction of the Los Angeles-based World Ballet Company is spearheaded by Gulya Hartwick and Sasha Gorskaya, with an overall goal of making ballet accessible to everyone.

The 2-hour and 30-minute production of Swan Lake includes a 20-minute intermission and is appropriate for audience members ages 5 and up.

Dance shows like this may choose to use brochure printing to create audience programs and music sheets.

World Ballet Company: Swan Lake is happening on October 14 at 7 pm, with doors open at 6 pm, at the Mayo Civic Center at 30 Civic Center Dr SE in Rochester.
