A fresh spin on a popular musical will be bringing its magic to the stage in Rochester in late January.
Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation is a show that puts a comedic twist on popular Broadway musicals while also taking time to parody individual performers. The original iteration of the show started in 1982. It attracted both the general public and some of the actors being parodied themselves. The musical is so well-loved that it even received the honor of a Special Tony Award.
Gerard Alessandrini, the creator, director, producer, and star of the show, works alongside fellow producers Harriet Yellin, David Zippel, John Freedson, and Peter Brash, as well as associate Tzili Charney, and choreographer Gerry McIntyre to bring everything to life. Performers include pianist Catherine Stornetta and actors Jenny Lee Stern, Immanuel Houston, Joshua Turchin, Chris Collins-Pisano, and Aline Mayagoitia.
Some of the shows and stars being spoofed in the performance include Hadestown, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Moulin Rouge, Bette Midler, Beetlejuice, The Lion King, Bernadette Peters, Dear Evan Hansen, Fiddler on the Roof (the all-Yiddish version), and Frozen.
Tickets range in cost at the time of writing from $42 to $62. Purchases can be made through Ticketmaster. Poster printing will often be used to promote stage productions like this.
The venue for the event is the Mayo Civic Center, where the fun begins at 7:00 pm on January 25.
