The museum is planning to move to a new location at Apache Mall. Museum officials officially said goodbye to its old location during an open day that was held for staff, families and patrons. The new spot will be known as “Spark” and it will be open in the summer. This new space will be twice as big as the previous location.
The decision was made after several studies were carried out with the goal of finding new ways for the organization to scale up. It had been located at the same spot for eight years and they are only just putting their plans into action. The new location won’t open for a few months to come. In the meantime, museum officials will be carrying out pop-up events all over Olmstead County. Print shops and Stationery printers are often used when organizing traveling events.
Having to change locations has been met with some resistance however the general feel around the move is that it is for the better. Beth Sherden who is the Minnesota Children’s Museum of Rochester’s Director stated:
“Usually closings are a bit of a sad thing, but in this case - it’s so that we can open up a new chapter. So when you look at it that way, it’s very exciting.”
The museum is raising funds to help with the move and it has collected 83% of the $2.6 million aim.
