2026 yellow perch limit set for Mille Lacs Lake

Princeton anglers need to be aware that February 9 began a change in the daily catch and possession limit with regard to Mille Lacs Lake and yellow perch extending through the end of November.

The new limit is five, which is half of what it had been. The limit adjustment was made by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to maintain a healthy perch population while staying within the state’s harvestable surplus share.

In addition to their culinary appeal, yellow perch are also one of the Mille Lacs Lake ecosystem’s key species as they are a primary food source for aquatic predators, particularly walleye.

Those who possess state fishing licenses share Mille Lacs Lake’s perch harvest with Ojibwe Tribes who via treaty retain fishing rights to the lake. The state and the Tribes work cooperatively to conserve the fishery by establishing yearly safe harvest levels. Each party uses fishing regulations to keep within their share of the fish harvest.

Minnesota’s share of the perch harvest for Mille Lacs Lake is 36,500 of which the state had harvested by January 18 over 17,000 pounds of perch.

Fishing regulations for Mille Lacs Lake including regularly updated data concerning the catching limits for northern pike, walleye and yellow perch can be accessed via the Minnesota DNR website.
