What's in a name?
Fairmont got its name in an unusual way—in connection with the railroads. According to one 1908 book, W.H. Budd and other commissioners of Martin County were looking for a location for the county seat. In 1857, they decided on Fairmont, and gave it this name because it was the highest point along the chain of five lakes for which the community is known, and had the most scenic view.
