An upcoming event in Chanhassen will help keep items out of the landfill, give talented people a chance to practice their skills, and build community.
A Better Society, which is a local non-profit organization, and Carver County Environmental Services are joining forces to create more Fix-It Clinics in Carver County. The clinics are free and are manned by volunteers who help participants fix small items they would otherwise throw away. Typical products brought for repair include bicycles, small engines, clothing, vacuum cleaners, and other typical household products.
The event is more than a passive experience. People bringing in items for repair have a chance to talk with the volunteer repair person about the problem, and work together with them to fix it. If they determine they cannot fix the item, volunteers will attempt to diagnose the problem in detail, and supply part numbers for the owner, other options for repair, and disposal and recycling options.
Clinics like this are the perfect way for people to have their household items repaired, to understand more about their appliances, and join in a discussion about reducing waste and changing the “throw away” attitude.
People interested in attending will need to register first. Information is available at the A Better Society website. The Fix-It Clinic is scheduled for March 7 at A Better Society, 1453 Park Road. Community events like this often benefit when organizers use flyer printing to create handouts for local distribution.
