Fans celebrate Princes life in Minnesota

Last month, fans of the late music artist Prince gathered in the small town of Henderson, Minnesota, to mark what would have been his 60th birthday.

The event was a three-day get-together taking place from June 7 to 9. The pop star’s devotees came from across America and beyond, with the guestbook bearing signatures from Australia and the United Kingdom.

The event, officially called the Celebration of Prince, took place mostly inside the Henderson Event Center. During the gaps in the (non-purple) June rain, fans were able to embark on tours of filming locations from Prince’s famous film Purple Rain, which was partially shot in Hammond. The Celebration was put together by Joel King, who worked as a cameraman on Prince’s final film Graffiti Bridge. Other events included a screening of Purple Rain, tribute performances by local musicians, and the dedication of a mural featuring the pop star.

Prince, who was a native of nearby Chanhassen, was a global star but has a special meaning to residents of the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. Since his death in 2016, memorial events have ranged from the half-time show of this January’s big game, to local events promoted through the Internet and Print advertising like poster printing and banner printing. Through events like this, fans hope to keep the spirit of Prince alive.
