A Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Development grant in the amount of $164,500 has been awarded to Shelby Township towards building an accessible boat launch in River Bends Park.
This will be a state-of-the-art EZ Launch boat facility that will surpass standards for ADA compliance and will provide a safe entry point which will be free of barriers for canoeists and kayakers. This project will connect the park with communities in the area and enhance accessibility to water trails for everyone.
More details about such projects and their benefits can be provided with flyer printing.
Joe Youngblood, Recreation and Maintenance Director for the Shelby Township Parks, said that the current launch area in the park has a steep decline and dirt path so limits those with disabilities to enjoy this part of the water trail. He said that consequently, the staff of the Parks and Recreation Department and the Board of Trustees took action to ensure that everyone will be able to use the Clinton River.
The National Environmental Education Foundation and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan have also awarded grants to the project in the amounts of $20,000 and $50,000 respectively, to fund the entire cost of the project.
Ground was broken on the project in July 2023, and it is expected to be completed by this summer.
