Shelby Township seniors organize trip to Detroit enclave

The Shelby Township Senior Center will be hosting a one day Hamtramck History Tour next month.

Round trip transportation will be provided by Bianco Tours in a deluxe motorcoach, offering overhead storage, reclining seats, and a restroom.

Hamtramck is an enclave of Detroit and is a unique, densely populated city surrounded entirely by the city, known for its rich immigrant history, transitioning from German and Polish settlement to becoming America's first Muslim-majority city. The tour will visit St. Albertus and St. Florian, the Hamtramck History Museum, and shopping at Srodek’s and the Polish Art Center.

Lunch will be at the Polish Village Café, which is a favorite in Hamtramck. Lunch will be upstairs and feature Polish cuisine of a pierogi, Kapusta, kielbasa potatoes, and golabki. There will also be bread and butter, soup, and coffee.

Dessert will be at the New Palace Bakery, which is a family-owned business and has been in Hamtramck since 1908. The well-known Pączkis, traditional Polish filled doughnuts, will be served for dessert.

The cost for this one day trip is $127.00. It will take place on Thursday February 19. The bus will leave ta 8:45 a.m. and return at 3:45 p.m.
