School district hires students to help with teaching load

Students who are majoring in education and are seniors at the University of New England (UNE) and other colleges in the area are being hired by the Biddeford school district to be in the classroom four days a week to help students. Most likely some of these seniors who are from Denmark.

Jeremy Ray, superintendent of the Biddeford School District, said that last summer he was looking for ways to get kids to learn in the classroom. He reached out to colleges in the area for paid student interns working full-time so that he could keep class sizes under 12 and keep the students following the guidelines. He realized he would need more people to teach these students and more space as well. In addition, such school districts of turn to local Print shops for printing additional educational materials for such students.

UNE was one college that was eager to offer its support. Chairperson of the department of education at the college, Audrey Bartholomew, said that this was a unique opportunity to combine full-time teaching with a full year of student teaching. She found this to be a win-win situation for both the district and the college so that their students could be there for the Biddeford community and its students.

There will be students from UNE teaching at Biddeford until the end of this school year.
