New hangar to be built in Fryeburg

Construction is set to continue in May at the Eastern Slope Regional Airport in Fryeburg on a transient jet hangar, which will be welcome news to surrounding areas such as Denmark.

Matthew O’Brien of McFarland Johnson, project engineer for the hangar, said that the hangar will span 100 by 100 feet. It is being built on the north side of the aircraft apron and will be used to shelter aircraft such as the helicopters used by the Canadian military and jets use by corporate executives, some of whom may come from nearby Denmark. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents and those in the surrounding communities of such needed projects.

The cost of the hangar s expected to be $2 million. A grant from the Economic Development Administration will cover $1.2 million of the cost; the Northern Borders Commission will contribute $500,000; and the New Hampshire and Maine Departments of Transportation will contribute $150,000. Several hundreds of thousands of dollars have been contributed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Pilots’ representative to the airport authority, Eric Meltzer, said that although the earthwork was started in January, that the project is now in a phase of material procurement so that the work needed to be paused. Once construction resumes, he said that the foundation will then be poured and the steel will be erected in June.

The project should be completed and ready for tenants in the winter of next year.
