Green Thumb Farms in Fryeburg has partnered with retailer Hannaford to develop and introduce the Fenway Red potato, a variety that is new to the state.
Residents of nearby Denmark are sure to want to try this new type of vegetable, along with the other produce that Green Thumb Farms has created.
Compared to most other red potatoes, which are oblong in shape, Fenway Reds are unique in that they are round and consistent. The microclimate of Mount Washington Valley where the farm is located, along with the sandy soils that can be found there, are ideal for cultivating the Fenway Red potato.
The potato has a velvety and firm texture which enables it to be good for mashing, roasting, and pan-frying, and also for chowder and stew recipes. It is sold in Bags of two pounds each and is currently available at Hannaford stores throughout New England. The Bags have a label from Farmer’s First. When promoting such new produce, grocery stores often turn to flyer printing as an effective way to notify customers of such unique items.
Director of sales and marketing at Green Thumb, Mike Hart, said that as more people are cooking at home these days, it is important to inform people that there are different types of potatoes and that they can have a variety of uses.
