The Danish connection
The township was formed from a grant made by the State of Massachusetts to the Fryeburg Academy, and two other state grants made to private citizens, as well as a strip of land taken from Brownfield, a neighboring town. The community incorporated in February 1807 and was named Denmark to show its solidarity with that nation. The Royal Navy had attacked Portland, Maine, in 1775, and then attacked Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, in 1801 and again in 1807, creating a connection between the two communities, though they were half a world apart.
