School district offers bus drivers more incentives
School districts in Maryland will be providing bus drivers with more incentives to keep them on the job.
Over the last two years, cities and towns in Montgomery County such as Gaithersburg have been dealing with a shortage of bus drivers. The crunch on bus drivers is being felt all over the country and the officials in Montgomery are dealing with this issue by offering better pay rates to the drivers.
According to Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight, school bus drivers will once again be given a bonus worth $25 for every extra route that they drive on. Printing services could be used to display bus routes and share them with interested parties.
If the driver has an extra route to drive in the morning as well as in the evening, they will get an extra $50 for that day. These bonuses were paid out toward the end of the last school year however the program was terminated when the school year finished.
Several routes had to be canceled this year due to the shortage of drivers. 59,000 routes were driven and 114 had to be canceled. In order to ensure that the routes are still safe, the district intends to start what it calls a “Sweeper Bus” program. This program will make it possible for buses to pick up students who did not get the notice that the route would be canceled.
