Library offers chance to pay off fines with food

Since the guilt and embarrassment of overdue library Books can often outweigh the actual cost of the fines, Gaithersburg Library is hoping that consciences will be soothed as it encourages members to participate in the 2nd annual Food for Fines.

Locals can take along to any local branch canned, dried, or bottled nonperishable food, and they will reduce fines by $1 for every item. All the food collected will go to the community food bank, the Manna Food Centre. This is an innovative and original way to contribute to a charity, pay off those outstanding fines, and have the library replenished with missing Books.

For those who have no fines but would still like to take part, donations are welcomed at any of the drop off points. There are sure to be Flyers and Posters helping to promote this charity drive, informing the community when, where, and how they can participate.

Last year, Food for Fines collected approximately 6,000lbs of food. This was distributed throughout the community to those most in need. This year’s program runs from 16th to 30th October.

Discussing the program, Montgomery County Public Libraries Director Parker Hamilton said:

“Our library customers are always willing to help out. Our Food for Fines program not only gives a break to our customers with fines, but also does a great community service.”
