Empowering Gaithersburg students through written word

A Night of Empowerment will be held in Gaithersburg next month in support of the Etta Lloyd Walker foundation. Adults and children ages five and up are asked to purchase tickets in advance.

The evening will include high school students and local area artists sharing their original poetry and stories. Presenters have been asked to prepare work showcasing the impact that change has had on their lives. Their works will also convey the importance of education, mentorship and self-esteem to their future success.

Attendees will also learn about the scholarships provided by the Etta Lloyd Walker Foundation, to at-risk youths in Liberia. Groups like this often use brochure printing to share the success stories, they have from their past work. Organizers would like to raise awareness of the need for a local chapter of the Etta Lloyd Walker Foundation, to provide support to Latino, Latina and African American students in the United States. All proceeds from the event will be in support of 20 students in Liberia receiving scholarships, as well as a new local mentorship program starting next month.

Attendees are encouraged to dress in a Bohemian inspired outfit. Tickets for adults and children ages 12 and up cost $25.00. Children ages five and up are also welcome, at $15.00 each. Ticket purchases include a beverage, like Caribbean iced tea, and a plate of food including salmon croquettes, jerk chicken and jollof rice. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday July 10the from 7:00–10:00 PM, at the Gaithersburg location of BurgerIM, located at 200 Ellington Boulevard.
