Concrete crusher to be installed near Crofton

Tolson & Associates has been given permission to use a new screening and crushing machine at the Tolson Rubble Landfill close to Crofton. The new machine is able to process more than 400,000lb of concrete every hour and it is powered by five diesel engines.

Approval was given by the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE). Tolson & Associates already gained permission to run a landfill for ruble at the same site and it felt that installing a crusher to recycle concrete was a better idea than putting it in a landfill. The crusher will be placed inside the landfill’s footprint and the crushed material will be sold. The recycled concrete can be used for landscaping and paving.

The main environmental concern with the crusher was the possibility of air pollution caused by crushing concrete. The MDE agreed to give the company a permit because it feels that the crushing will not have any adverse effects on the environment. The MDE has made it a requirement for the company to control the dust using a wet suppression system. Trucks transporting the concrete cannot move faster than 15mph. Printing services can be used to inform people about new regulations on site.

The MDE listened to comments from the public before issuing the permit. Those who wish to file a petition for a judicial review of the MDE’s decision in the County's Circuit Court have until February 10 to do so.
