Anne Arundel County school districts to be redistricted

School board members in Anne Arundel County have voted to adopt a new redistricting plan for Crofton in order to make the schooling system more efficient.

The plan was recommended by George Arlotto, and took several weeks to deliberate, with four separate options considered. This plan marks the first time in 30 years that Crofton has amended its high school boundaries.

Close to half of the board supported Option 1, which gives the students in Waugh Chapel the choice to either remain at Crofton Elementary or move to Piney Orchard. Option 3 was also a popular choice because the board was wary of the fact that Crofton's and Arundel's middle schools are already dealing with overcrowding problems. Several of those schools are close to or beyond their capacity.

The final plan ended up being Option 1, with a few elements from the other options included. The board gave local community members a chance to express their views on the proposed changes.

Samantha Weaver, who carries the title of President of Nantucket Elementary School PTA on her Business Cards, was delighted by the results of the meeting for community members. She stated:

“Option 1 brings stability and consistency that has been missing for 21 years.”

The proposed changes to take effect include:

• Temporary redistricting of students from Two Rivers to Piney Elementary School until the West County Elementary School is opened
• Sending students from Riverwalk to Crofton High School
• Sending students from Arundel to Crofton High School
