Tasty developments in Bethesda
Bethesda residents who are adventurous diners and want to try something new have an opportunity to sample a different cuisine.
Shouk, a local chain of restaurants, has expanded to include a new location in Bethesda. The restaurants serve Israeli street food, and their dishes are plant based. The concept of the restaurants follows the fast-casual model and serves many different pita dishes, such as mushroom shawarma, falafel, a veggie burger called the Shouk Burger, and cauliflower with za’atar (a spice mixture of herbs and sesame seeds). Most menu items are priced between $10 and $13.
In addition to the pitas, Shouk serves items that are familiar to anyone who knows Middle Eastern cuisine, including red lentil soup, hummus, and falafel.
The restaurant says it is on a “Food Mission” to move the world toward plant-based eating. It points out that more than half of global greenhouse gases come from livestock. Shouk uses tasty spices, grains, beans, and fresh vegetables to craft its dishes, with nothing engineered or processed. In addition, all its locations are powered entirely by wind energy.
The first Shouk location opened six years ago in Washington, D.C. Since then, the chain has added a second location in Rockville and has now come to Bethesda.
The Bethesda restaurant is located at 5436 Westbard Avenue and is open daily from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. When new businesses open, they should create business cards to distribute to customers to help bring traffic to the location.
