What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Musical feast coming to Bethesda

An upcoming program features new works along with a classic that will provide a memorable evening for everyone.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will be playing three pieces: “Sukkot Through Orion’s Nebula” by James Lee III; “Glasslands” by Anna Clyne; and the iconic “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. Jonathon Heyward will be on the podium, with saxophonist Jess Gillam and the women’s chorus of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society.

Lee ‘s “Sukkot,” which is Hebrew for “Feast of Tabernacles,” was inspired by texts from both the Old and New Testaments. Careful instrumentation is meant to evoke the image of the Messiah descending from heaven through the constellation of Orion.

“Glasslands,” which Clyne composed in 2021, is a concerto written for orchestra and soprano saxophone. The work is only a few minutes long and has an upbeat, “jazzy” feel.

Lee’s “Orion” ties in nicely with the major work on the program, Holst’s “The Planets. The work is an orchestral suite composed by Holst between 1914 and 1917. Each of the movements musically describes the alleged astrological character of the planet named in the title. For instance, Mars is “The Bringer of War.” The movement is named for the Roman God of War and uses brass to evoke an image of strength and power.

The concert is set for January 11 at The Music Center at Strathmore, starting at 8.00 pm. When they plan events like this, organizers will often work with brochure printing to create programs for the performance.
